The Himachal Pradesh Bar Council has strongly condemned the sloganeering, abusive language, and attempts to malign the image of judges who delivered the verdict in the Yug Gupta murder case.

Reaffirming its unwavering commitment to upholding the dignity and independence of the judiciary—essential to the rule of law and democratic governance—the Bar Council denounced such conduct as deeply disrespectful to the justice system.

An emergency general meeting of the Council was convened on September 26 after a procession was taken out in Shimla by a large number of people expressing anger over the High Court’s judgment in the case.

In a press release, the Council noted that following the verdict, certain groups engaged in unruly behavior by shouting slogans, using offensive language, and making derogatory remarks against the judges.

The Council unanimously resolved that such acts amount to grave contempt of law, an affront to the dignity of the judiciary, and an attack on the very foundations of the rule of law. It stressed that judicial independence is one of the basic features of the Indian Constitution, and any attempt to intimidate, undermine, or misuse it erodes public confidence in the justice system.

The Council also pointed out that officials who granted permission for the procession should have anticipated the consequences, while the police, entrusted with maintaining law and order, failed in their duty to control the unruly crowd.

The Bar Council has urged the police to take immediate action against those who used derogatory language against the judges and the judiciary, and further demanded that individual accountability be fixed on government officials who neglected their responsibilities.
