TransUnion Says Data of 4.4 Million Consumers Exposed in Hack

Credit bureau TransUnion said on Thursday that data belonging to more than 4 million people was exposed in a recent cyberattack carried out by an unidentified third party.

In a letter written earlier this week and posted on the Maine Attorney General’s website, the company disclosed that “a recent cyber incident involved a third-party application that supports our U.S. consumer operations.”

In a statement, TransUnion stressed that it had “promptly contained the issue, which did not involve our core credit database or credit reports.”

Maine law requires companies to disclose certain types of breaches affecting state residents. While the name of the third-party application was not revealed, many U.S. corporations have recently reported breaches linked to hackers tricking employees into exposing their employers’ Salesforce databases.

A Salesforce spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
