Mandi, August 20 – Continuous heavy rainfall has worsened hardships across the district, with repeated landslides forcing the closure of both link roads and national highways, causing major inconvenience to commuters as well as the administration.
The Mandi–Pathankot National Highway (NH-154) has remained shut since Wednesday morning after a massive landslide occurred near Lawandi Bridge, a few kilometers from Mandi town. The highway was blocked around 8 a.m. and remains impassable.
Restoration work is underway with the help of NHAI machinery, but intermittent rain continues to hamper operations. As a result, dozens of vehicles are stranded on both sides of the highway, forcing many passengers to proceed on foot.
Priya, a woman police official stationed at the site, said the continuous seepage of water from the hillside is delaying clearance. Pipelines are being laid to divert the water flow, after which restoration of the road may become possible.
Padhar SDM Surjit Singh informed that efforts to clear the highway are ongoing. Vehicles stranded near Drang have been diverted through an alternative route, while others stuck in the jam will be allowed to move only after the road is restored. He also appealed to motorists to drive cautiously given the frequent landslides on the highway, and advised residents to step out only if absolutely necessary.
