Shimla, August 3:
Several districts in Himachal Pradesh recorded above-average rainfall during the month of July, impacting daily life and infrastructure. According to the latest data from the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, Shimla district received 70% more rainfall than normal, while Mandi recorded 49% above normal and Kullu saw a 25% surplus. The excessive rainfall in these areas led to numerous incidents of landslides, road damage, and destruction to public and private property.

The silver lining is that unlike July 2023, which saw a 75% surplus, rainfall this year has generally remained closer to seasonal averages, reducing the scale of disaster across the state. However, localized weather events have still caused significant disruption in certain areas.

Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, stated that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in most parts of the state on August 4 and 5, prompting the department to issue a weather alert. With the exception of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur, the rest of Himachal’s 10 districts are likely to experience intense rain.

The forecast also warns of waterlogging in low-lying and mid-hill areas, rising river and stream levels, and potential landslides. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to high-risk zones and to strictly follow advisories issued by the Meteorological Department.

Disaster response teams have been placed on high alert to ensure swift action in case of emergencies. The monsoon is expected to remain active in the state until at least August 7.
