Shimla, July 9:
Farmer and worker unions held a strong demonstration in Shimla on Wednesday in response to the nationwide call by central trade unions to protest against the Centre’s new labour codes. The protest rally began at Panchayat Bhawan and concluded at Chowra Maidan, where union leaders addressed a public meeting and criticized the government’s labour and economic policies.

CITU State President Vijender Mehra stated that the protest was aimed at opposing what he called the anti-worker and anti-farmer policies of the central government. Similar demonstrations were held at district headquarters across Himachal Pradesh. In Shimla, workers from IGMC, hotel staff, anganwadi workers, and outsourced employees joined the protest and raised their voices against the new labour laws.

Mehra alleged that the four new labour codes significantly undermine workers’ rights, including the right to strike, and weaken existing labour protections. He further accused the Centre of privatizing public sector units to benefit corporate interests and said that workers in the unorganized sector were being left vulnerable and insecure.

He added that this nationwide strike has seen participation not only from workers in industry, banking, hospitality, and informal sectors, but also from students, youth, and farmers.

The protest was part of a larger campaign led by ten central trade unions and their affiliated organizations, demanding the immediate repeal of all four labour codes. According to Mehra, the new laws are a direct attack on workers’ rights and must be withdrawn without delay.
