Himachal to Expand Transport Services: 297 Electric Buses to Hit Roads by March 2026, Says CM Sukhu

Shimla, July 4:
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) to expand its services to the state’s remote and hilly regions. Emphasizing the vital role of HRTC, he said the state government is committed to providing affordable, safe, and modern transport services to the people of Himachal Pradesh.

Chairing a high-level review meeting of the HRTC, the Chief Minister announced that 297 Type-1 electric buses will be operational across the state by March 2026. In addition, the procurement of 30 Type-2 electric buses is currently in progress. He noted that this initiative will not only promote environmental sustainability but also strengthen HRTC’s financial self-reliance.

The Chief Minister also instructed officials to explore the potential of green hydrogen-powered buses as part of the state’s broader plan to transform Himachal Pradesh into a Green Energy State by March 2026.

To improve passenger convenience and operational efficiency, CM Sukhu called for the development of a unified bus pass system and real-time bus tracking. He added that these digital upgrades would enhance transparency and management across HRTC services. Additionally, he directed that an e-office system be implemented at the HRTC headquarters without delay.

In a move to further enhance operational capacity, the CM also announced the setting up of a new HRTC workshop in Theog, Shimla district. He reiterated the government’s full commitment to transforming HRTC into a robust and viable institution.

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, also present at the meeting, offered valuable suggestions and praised the dedication and hard work of HRTC employees.

The meeting was attended by PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh, Infrastructure Advisor Anil Kapil, Additional Chief Secretary R.D. Nazim, Principal Secretary Devesh Kumar, CM’s Secretary Rakesh Kanwar, CM’s OSD Gopal Sharma, HRTC MD Dr. Nipun Jindal, and other senior officials.
