Massive Tragedy in Seraj, Mandi: Everything Devastated, 7 Dead and Over 20 Still Missing
Pictures of the tragedy in Seraj
Mandi, July 2:
Seraj, the home constituency of former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, is facing one of the worst disasters of the year. The region suffered catastrophic damage due to relentless rain on June 30 and July 1, with Seraj emerging as the hardest-hit area. The situation is so dire that even within a one-kilometre radius, no one knows what is unfolding. Roads, power supply, and mobile connectivity have been completely severed, and accurate information has yet to reach the Mandi district administration. As a result, relief and rescue teams have not yet been able to enter the most affected zones.
On Monday, Deputy Commissioner Mandi, Apoorv Devgan, personally traveled to the region and managed to restore road access for small vehicles up to Bagasyad. Mobile connectivity was also partially restored there. However, beyond Bagasyad, there was complete information blackout. It was only when a few locals from Thunag and nearby areas climbed to higher ground and managed to get mobile network that images and details of the devastation started to emerge—revealing the true scale of the tragedy.
Jai Ram Thakur Heads to Seraj
Jai Ram Thakur confirmed that reliable information is still difficult to obtain due to network failure. However, based on initial and unverified reports, around 100 homes and shops have been destroyed in Thunag market alone. Seven bodies have been recovered from the area, while 12 people are reported missing from Deji Pakhrair. Jarol market has also been reduced to rubble, with one body recovered. One body was found in Pandav Shila, where two more individuals remain missing. Police teams have reached Janjehli, and SDRF teams have made it to Bagasyad, but access beyond remains extremely limited.
Due to the lack of mobile network, clear and verified updates are still unavailable. All roads in the subdivision have been washed away at multiple points. Most bridges have collapsed, and electricity and water supply systems have been completely destroyed. A major food shortage is looming. Based on preliminary inputs, over 400 homes in Thunag subdivision are either partially or completely damaged. Residents have been forced to take shelter in the open. Hospitals, schools, and other government buildings have also been affected.
Thakur stated that he has spoken to the Chief Minister and urged accelerated relief and rescue operations. He has also held a meeting with district officials to assess the situation and instructed them to intensify restoration efforts without delay.
