Baddi, 23 June:
The under-construction Pinjore–Baddi–Nalagarh four-lane highway—an essential link between the BBN (Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh) industrial hub and Delhi, Chandigarh, and Haryana—has deteriorated so badly that it is scarcely passable, whether by vehicle or on foot.

From the Baddi toll barrier to the Truck Union, the carriageway is pock-marked with craters that fill with rainwater, turning long stretches into virtual rivers. The construction contractor has yet to install an adequate drainage system, leaving storm-water to pool across the road.

Leaders of the Small Industries Association—including president Ashok Rana, general secretary Anil Malik, treasurer Vasundhara Aggarwal and chairman Vichitra Singh Patial—have criticised the Centre, the Union Ministry of Road Transport, and the project contractor for what they call an inexcusable delay and neglect. The group has lodged a formal complaint with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Chairman Patial noted that while the government often claims to lay 100 kilometres of road each day, the 37-kilometre stretch from Pinjore to Nalagarh remains unfinished after eleven years—“a disgrace,” he said.

Monsoon Makes Matters Worse

Ashok Rana reported that near Neelam Hotel and Laj Motors the tarmac has vanished altogether, leaving a torrent-like track. “During the day your clothes are splattered; at night you risk your life,” he said, urging the Prime Minister and Union Minister to intervene and calling on the Baddi SDM to address the drainage failure immediately.

Industrial Backbone Under Strain

The crumbling highway is now crippling the region’s industry. Trucks hauling raw materials in and finished goods out face frequent breakdowns, while private motorists complain of back injuries—slipped discs among them—caused by the brutal ride.

Local businesses warn that unless the road is restored swiftly, the economic lifeline of one of North India’s key industrial corridors will continue to fray.
