Shimla, 20 June A controversy has erupted in Himachal Pradesh over alleged cheating in the recent police recruitment examination. Leader of the Opposition Jairam Thakur has levelled serious accusations of malpractice, claiming there is strong evidence that the question paper was leaked. Two people have already been arrested in connection with the case, he noted.

Thakur called for an independent, high‑level investigation into the written test. “If the state government is unwilling or unable to conduct a fair inquiry, the matter should be handed over to the CBI,” he said.

“This is the first recruitment drive in the past two‑and‑a‑half years under the current Congress government, and even this has been tainted by cheating—something the candidates themselves are openly alleging,” Thakur told reporters.
He asserted that CCTV footage from examination halls captured “blatant group cheating,” but claimed the government is pressuring officials not to release the video.

The Opposition leader expressed concern that examination records could be destroyed and accused the government of maintaining silence instead of taking decisive action. He urged the Chief Minister to ensure a transparent investigation, warning that “the entire exercise risks being nullified if evidence of group cheating is confirmed.”

Thakur contrasted the situation with his previous tenure, saying that during his government “over 60,000 youths were given jobs in five years,” while the current administration’s lone police recruitment effort is mired in controversy. He also criticised the government for not addressing grievances voiced by candidates on social media.

On a separate note, Thakur commented on rumours of discontent within the cabinet, referring to reports of a possible resignation by Minister Chander Kumar. “When even ministers and MLAs are unhappy, it shows the state of affairs,” he said, adding that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu should “consider stepping down” given the deteriorating situation.
