Una, June 19 — Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Minister Chander Kumar clarified on Wednesday that there was no need for him to resign, as the recent dispute over transfers was amicably resolved following a discussion with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

Speaking to the media, the minister expressed serious concern over the growing influence of what he termed a “transfer mafia” operating across the state, particularly within the Education Department, which he described as having become a “Pandora’s box.” He emphasized that the Chief Minister must take firm steps to curb this trend.

“In my own constituency, a few individuals and workers have turned transfers and adjustments into a full-time business,” he said, adding that it was this very issue that had led Neeraj Bharti to express discontent and hint at resignation. However, Kumar stated that there was no need to step down, as the issue was sorted out through dialogue with the Chief Minister.

Transfers Damaging the Government’s Image

Kumar admitted that the problem isn’t confined to one department alone:
“Every department sees this, but it’s most prevalent in education and health. Certain people and party workers are engaging in these activities, which tarnishes the government’s image. Action must be taken,” he insisted.

He further lamented that despite repeated discussions, a comprehensive transfer policy has yet to materialize.
“Instead of focusing on real development work, many workers approach us with transfer and adjustment demands—as if their only aim is to become legislators,” he added.

Disaster Relief Aid Insufficient

On the recent ₹2,006 crore relief package announced by the Centre for the 2023 natural disasters in Himachal, Kumar called it grossly inadequate.

“Compared to the actual assessed damage, the sanctioned amount is like a cumin seed in a camel’s mouth,” he said, criticizing the Centre for not fully acknowledging the scale of devastation faced by the state.
