Shimla, 17 June – The historic Ridge Maidan, Shimla’s iconic landmark and central tourist hub, is now grappling with litter and disarray in the aftermath of the Summer Festival. While the stalls set up for the festival have been removed, piles of garbage, plastic waste, and food remnants continue to mar the area’s charm.

During the festival, traders from various states had installed stalls on the Ridge. These were taken down yesterday, but clean-up efforts remain incomplete. The stretch above the Padamdev Complex is especially affected, with visible waste degrading both the beauty of the Ridge and the experience of visitors.

With Shimla currently witnessing a heavy tourist influx, such neglect at a prominent spot is damaging the city’s image. Tourists, hoping to enjoy the Ridge or capture scenic photographs, have instead been met with a disappointing sight.

Reacting to the issue, Uma Kaushal, Deputy Mayor of the Shimla Municipal Corporation, said that sanitation workers are actively working to clear the area, though rainfall since morning has hampered the clean-up. She added that all stallholders had been instructed to use dustbins, but many still left significant waste behind. To prevent a repeat in future events, she said, the Municipal Corporation will ensure placement of larger bins at such venues going forward.
