Vinay Kumar Likely to Be Appointed New Himachal Congress President, Crucial Meeting with Kharge Scheduled for June 14

Himachal Pradesh Congress appears poised for another major organizational shake-up, with strong indications that Vinay Kumar—Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly and MLA from Shillai (Shri Renuka Ji)—may be appointed as the new state party president. Following Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s recent visit to Delhi, Kumar’s name has emerged as a leading contender for the top party post.
Sources confirm that Vinay Kumar arrived in Delhi on Tuesday evening and is scheduled to meet Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on June 14. Kharge is currently touring Karnataka, and upon his return, a key meeting is expected to finalize changes within the Himachal Congress unit. Many party leaders and workers from Shri Renuka Ji constituency have described Vinay’s Delhi visit as a “new beginning,” with some even congratulating him in advance on becoming the new face of the party in the state. On social media, the development is being associated with the blessings of Maa Renuka Ji and Lord Parshuram.
Within party circles, the move is being seen as a strategic effort by the Congress high command to consolidate support among Scheduled Castes (SC) ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Earlier, CM Sukhu had proposed the names of Vinod Sultanpuri and Suresh Kumar for the post, but concerns over their lack of experience were raised by senior leaders. Vinay Kumar has since emerged as a more seasoned and widely acceptable candidate.
Vinay is no stranger to organizational responsibilities. When Pratibha Singh was appointed state Congress president in April 2022, he was made one of the four working presidents. Notably, he is now the only one among them who remains active in the Congress, with the other three having joined the BJP.
