Shimla, June 8:
After several days of relative relief, intense summer heat has returned to Himachal Pradesh, disrupting daily life across the state. On Sunday, rising temperatures and relentless sunshine affected both plains and hills alike, with even traditionally cool destinations like Manali, Kalpa, Koksar, and Keylong feeling the brunt of the heat.

According to the latest bulletin from the Shimla Meteorological Centre, maximum temperatures across the state rose by nearly two degrees Celsius on average. The worst impact was felt in the lowland districts of Una, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur, but heat levels in the hill regions were also noticeably higher.

Una recorded the state’s highest temperature at a searing 41.6°C. Other areas closely followed: Neri in Hamirpur at 40.3°C, Bilaspur at 39.1°C, and Kangra at 38.6°C. Barthin registered 37.4°C, Dhaula Kuan 37.1°C, and Sundernagar 37°C.

Surprisingly, even hill stations known for their cool climates are experiencing above-normal heat. Shimla, for instance, recorded a maximum of 26.8°C on Sunday—lower than Manali, which reported 29.7°C. Kasauli also touched 29.7°C, Koksar 28.1°C, and Kalpa 27°C.

In the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti, Keylong—part of what’s often called a “cold desert”—recorded an unusually high 26°C, three degrees above the seasonal norm. Meteorologists warn that temperatures could continue to rise over the next four to five days, with maximum temperatures expected to climb by 3–4°C and minimums by 2–3°C.

The weather is likely to remain dry in most parts of Himachal until June 12. However, a slight shift is expected on June 13 and 14, with forecasts indicating the possibility of light rain, thunderstorms, and lightning across various regions. Higher reaches may also see light snowfall, potentially offering some relief from the intense heat—though the precipitation is not expected to be heavy.

In view of the expected weather changes, the Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert for June 13 and 14, cautioning the public about potential thunderstorms and lightning activity.
