Kala Amb: ₹100-Crore ESIC Hospital Inaugurated, Over 1 Lakh Workers to Benefit

In a major step toward providing quality healthcare to workers, the central government on Friday inaugurated a state-of-the-art 30-bed hospital under the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) in Kala Amb, Himachal Pradesh. The facility was inaugurated by Union Minister for Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya.
Built at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore, the hospital is expected to benefit over one lakh insured workers and their families, significantly improving access to advanced medical care and infrastructure in Sirmaur district and neighboring areas.
The hospital is equipped with key departments including general medicine, surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, and dentistry, along with advanced support services such as modular operation theaters, a CSSD unit, and a medical gas pipeline system. It will provide both outpatient (OPD) and inpatient (IPD) services tailored to the needs of ESIC beneficiaries.
In addition, 40% of seats in educational institutions affiliated with ESIC will be reserved for the children of insured persons, ensuring improved access to higher education for workers’ families.
Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Mandaviya said, “This hospital is more than just a building—it stands as a symbol of the hard work and dedication of our labour force.” He added that the hospital has the potential to be upgraded to a 100-bed facility in the future.
He also announced that medical colleges will be set up at all ESIC hospitals across the country with 200 or more beds, with 40% of seats reserved for children of insured workers. This move, he said, aims to bridge the gap in access to quality higher education for working-class families.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to universal healthcare, Dr. Mandaviya shared a poignant example:
“When a file seeking ₹2 crore for life-saving drugs for the son of an insured worker came to my desk, we approved it without hesitation. Poverty must never be a barrier to life-saving treatment,” he said, emphasizing that building a healthy citizenry is key to creating a healthy society—and ultimately, a healthy nation.
The event was attended by Shimla MP Suresh Kashyap, Paonta Sahib MLA Sukh Ram Chaudhary, former Assembly Speaker Dr. Rajeev Bindal, ESIC Insurance Commissioner Anil Kumar Sahu, Medical Commissioner Dr. Rachita Biswas, Regional Director Col. Manjeet Katoch, and Medical Superintendent Dr. S.D. Sharma, along with other senior officials from the Ministry and ESIC.
