Shimla, May 27: Parents in Shimla have voiced strong opposition to the recent hike in bus pass fees for schoolchildren by the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC). On Monday, a delegation of concerned parents met with HRTC Managing Director Nipun Jindal, urging the corporation to immediately roll back the revised charges.
The parents alleged that HRTC has nearly doubled the pass fees for children commuting to private schools, placing a significant financial burden on ordinary households. They pointed out that the fees had already been increased just six months ago, and a second hike in such a short span is both unreasonable and unfair.
During the meeting, the delegation submitted a memorandum, warning that if the fee hike is not reversed promptly, they will be left with no choice but to take to the streets in protest. They emphasized that the original fee slabs for student passes should be reinstated and also objected to the increase in the minimum fare from ₹5 to ₹10, saying it disproportionately affects lower- and middle-income families.
In response, MD Nipun Jindal assured the parents that their concerns would be taken seriously and reviewed thoroughly. He added that the corporation remains committed to prioritizing the welfare of students and their families and will consider necessary revisions if feasible.
This protest reflects a growing public awareness and sensitivity around the rising cost of education-related services, particularly in the context of ongoing economic pressures. All eyes are now on HRTC to see whether it will revisit its decision in light of the public outcry.
