Shimla, May 27: Education Minister Rohit Thakur today released a new Pahari folk song titled ‘Thundal Ki Harool’, performed by singer Dinesh Sharma, who hails from Dungi village in Sangrah, Sirmaur district. The song is based on a nearly 800-year-old local legend from the ancient village of Thundal, located in Pulwahal, within the Chopal constituency of Shimla district.

Speaking at the release, Minister Thakur said that such artistic efforts play a vital role in preserving and promoting the region’s rich cultural heritage and keeping its proud history alive. He shared that his own ancestral roots trace back to Thundal village, and praised the song for bringing to life not only the story of the villagers’ migration but also other forgotten historical narratives. The song offers a glimpse into the ancient folk traditions, lifestyle, and customs of the local people.

Rohit Thakur also commended lyricist Meena Ram Sanghaik for crafting the narrative in the traditional Harool style, singer Dinesh Sharma for his performance, and music composer Dinesh DK, along with the residents of Kathwar village, for their collective contribution. Through this song, the creators have attempted to revive and share an age-old folk tale with a broader audience.

The ballad recounts the saga of Thundal, once a prosperous and prominent village. At the heart of the tale is the village chief, Bidan, who comes into conflict with the ruling king after refusing to pay taxes (lagaan). The disagreement escalates into a fierce battle, culminating in the king’s army setting the village ablaze. Following the destruction, the villagers of Thundal are said to have migrated to distant regions including Barthata in Jubbal and Kathwar in Sirmaur.

The legend has been passed down orally for generations, and continues to be sung by communities in the region. Through ‘Thundal Ki Harool’, this timeless tale finds a new voice in modern times.
