CM Sukhu interacting
Shimla, May 27:
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday emphasized the Himachal Pradesh government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure, stating that ₹1,350 crore will be invested in upgrading medical technology across the state. The announcement came during an interaction with the faculty of Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, and the Atal Institute of Medical Super Speciality in Chamiyana.
The Chief Minister said all medical institutions will replace equipment over 20 years old within the next year. He also announced that robotic surgery units will be launched within two months at the Chamiyana and Tanda medical colleges. In a phased rollout, 3-Tesla MRI machines will also be installed across all government medical colleges.
To enhance the learning environment for students, new hostels will be built, and hospital parking facilities will be upgraded. The Chief Minister added that preference in nursing recruitment will be given to staff who served during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also noted that doctors, paramedics, and technicians are being hired to bring the doctor-patient and nurse-patient ratios in line with international standards.
Highlighting the need for major reforms, CM Sukhu remarked that premier health institutions have largely been reduced to referral centers. He stated that ₹100 crore has already been spent to strengthen services at IGMC Shimla, and an additional ₹200 crore will be allocated to further upgrade its infrastructure. Acknowledging the financial strain caused by the restoration of the old pension scheme, he reaffirmed the government’s resolve to continue investing in public healthcare. He urged doctors to treat patients with empathy and compassion.
Health Minister Col. (Dr.) Dhani Ram Shandil said such interactions help reinforce and shape healthcare policy. He noted significant progress in medical education and technological infrastructure in the state, making quality treatment more accessible to people locally. Also present at the event were Technical Education Minister Rajesh Dharmani, MLA Harish Janartha, Health Secretary M. Sudha Devi, and other senior officials.
