Dharamshala, May 25:
Kangra Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Hemraj Bairwa has directed all hydropower project operators in the district to install early warning systems by June 10, under provisions of the Disaster Management Act. Sub-divisional magistrates have also been instructed to conduct field inspections and submit their reports to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).

According to the directive, each early warning system must be capable of covering a minimum radius of five kilometers with its alarm signal. Hydropower project managers are also required to submit monthly compliance reports regarding the functionality and maintenance of these systems.

The Deputy Commissioner emphasized that failure to comply with these orders will invite strict action under the Disaster Management Act.

He noted that early warning systems play a critical role in ensuring the safety of people living near hydropower installations. Given that such projects are typically situated along riverbanks, they are prone to natural hazards such as flash floods, cloudbursts, or potential dam failures. An effective warning system can significantly mitigate the impact of such disasters by alerting local populations in advance.

In addition to early warning systems, the Deputy Commissioner stressed the importance of robust disaster management plans and flood forecasting mechanisms to enhance preparedness and protect lives and property in vulnerable areas.
