Shimla, May 22:
Authorities are preparing to release excess water from the Nathpa Jhakri Hydropower Project (NJHPS), located in Jhakri, Shimla district. The controlled discharge is expected to cause a sudden rise in the water level of the Sutlej River. In light of this, residents living near the riverbanks have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

In a public advisory issued by NJHPS on Thursday, officials confirmed that excess water will be released from the Nathpa Dam in a regulated manner. To prevent any untoward incidents, both the project management and district administration have urged locals to stay away from the river during this time.

Move Away from the River as Soon as the Sirens Sound

Before the water is released, sirens will be sounded as a warning. People are instructed to treat these sirens seriously—leave the riverbanks immediately upon hearing them. Activities such as fishing, bathing, washing clothes, or grazing animals near the river should be strictly avoided.

Villages like Rampur, Jhakri, Nirmand, and others located along the Sutlej River are considered particularly vulnerable. Residents in these areas have been notified in advance, as a rapid rise in water level could pose a serious risk.

Do Not Ignore the Warnings

The project authorities have stressed that ignoring safety advisories could lead to dangerous consequences. They have urged everyone to not only stay away from the river themselves but also ensure that children and livestock are kept at a safe distance.

This preventive measure is part of standard operating procedures during high water flow periods and is essential for the safety of communities living near the river.
