Himachal Apple Growers Meet Governor, Demand Ban on Turkish Apple Imports
Shimla, May 20:
The call to ban apple imports from Turkey is gaining momentum, with apple growers from Himachal Pradesh urging the central government to act swiftly. On Tuesday, a delegation from the Himachal Pradesh United Kisan Manch met the Governor at Raj Bhavan in Shimla, submitting a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding an immediate halt to Turkish apple imports.
The demand has intensified in light of recent geopolitical tensions. Turkey has openly supported Pakistan by supplying drones amid rising hostility between India and Pakistan, leading to widespread calls for a boycott of Turkish goods across the country, including Himachal.
Harish Chauhan, President of the United Kisan Manch, said that Turkish apple imports are severely impacting apple growers in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir. He stressed that allowing continued imports from a nation that has supported a hostile neighbour is unacceptable to Indian citizens and detrimental to local horticulture.
“The central government must take decisive action,” Chauhan said. “The import of Turkish apples is not only an economic issue but also a matter of national sentiment. Our growers are suffering real losses due to unfair market competition.”
The delegation urged the government to stand with domestic producers and prioritize national interest by imposing an immediate ban on Turkish apples.
