Dharamshala, May 20:
The Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education (HPBOSE) has acknowledged a significant error in the evaluation of Class 12 English exam papers and announced that revised results will be issued within two days. Board Secretary Dr. Major Vishal Sharma confirmed this during a press conference held in Dharamshala on Tuesday.
The revision comes after a wave of complaints from teachers’ associations, private schools, and parents, pointing out unusually low scores in English this year. Upon investigation, the board found that due to a technical oversight, the answer key used for evaluation belonged to the March 8 English paper, which had been cancelled. The revised exam, conducted later, should have been the basis for evaluation, but its answer key was mistakenly not used.
Dr. Sharma admitted the lapse caused both mental stress and academic disadvantage for students. He assured that in the revised results, only an increase in marks will be considered, and no student’s original score will be reduced. The overall pass percentage is also expected to improve once the updated marks are issued.
The board has also initiated disciplinary action against the officials responsible for the error. Education Minister Rohit Thakur reportedly took a serious view of the matter and emphasized the need for a fair re-evaluation process.
To recall, the original English exam scheduled for March 8 had to be cancelled in Chamba’s Chuwadi area after a mix-up in paper distribution — a bundle meant for Class 10 was mistakenly opened for Class 12 students. While the exam was re-conducted, the evaluation team erroneously used the answer key from the cancelled exam.
In this year’s Class 12 results, which were declared last Saturday, students scored full marks in several subjects. However, in English, even the state topper received only 88 marks, raising widespread concerns over the evaluation process. That discrepancy, now confirmed, has led to this corrective action.
Out of nearly 90,000 students who appeared for the exams, the overall pass percentage was 83.16%, considered satisfactory by the board. With the revised English scores, that figure may now see a further rise.
