Dharamshala, May 18:
A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Sunday in the village of Mele, under the Mundhi panchayat of Dhira subdivision in Kangra district, where a grandfather and his two young grandsons drowned in the Neugal Khad. The tragic accident has cast a pall of grief over the entire village.

According to reports, Prakash Chand, a 70-year-old resident of Mele, had gone to the stream early Sunday morning with his grandsons, Aarush (8) and Taru (6), to wash clothes. While he was cleaning clothes on the riverbank, the children began playing in the water.

Unnoticed, they ventured into deeper waters and began to struggle. Realizing the danger, Prakash Chand rushed in to save them—but was himself overwhelmed by the strong current and depth of the stream.

What began as a routine chore turned into a devastating tragedy within moments.

As soon as villagers learned of the incident, they rushed to the site and began rescue efforts, while also alerting the Thural police post. A police team soon arrived and, with the help of locals, launched a rescue operation.

The bodies of all three were recovered shortly thereafter and sent for post-mortem examination.

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating:

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of three members of the same family in the Mele village of Kangra district. My heartfelt prayers are with the departed souls and with the grieving family during this difficult time.”

The incident has left the local community in shock, mourning the untimely loss of three lives from a single household.
