Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla Reviews State Preparedness Amid India-Pakistan Tensions
Shimla, May 9: In light of rising tensions between India and Pakistan, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla convened a high-level review meeting at Raj Bhavan today to assess the state’s readiness to maintain peace, law and order, and public safety. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Omkar Sharma, and Director General of Police Dr. Atul Verma.
Governor Shukla instructed all concerned agencies to remain on high alert. Praising the success of “Operation Sindoor,” he described it as a historic achievement and commended the Indian Armed Forces for their action against Pakistan-backed terrorist groups. He warned that, in desperation, Pakistan may attempt retaliatory attacks, and stressed the need for complete preparedness.
Chief Secretary Saxena informed the Governor that Pakistani nationals in the state on short-term visas had already been deported. He also assured that adequate measures were in place to ensure the safety of Kashmiri residents in the state and that close monitoring was underway for Himachali students and citizens currently in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chief Secretary further briefed the Governor that the Chief Minister had already reviewed emergency preparedness with all Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police. These officials have been directed to conduct regular surveillance, hold mock drills, and review disaster management protocols, including the establishment of safe shelters. A statewide mock drill has also been conducted to raise awareness among the public and various agencies, and sensitive intelligence inputs have been shared with the appropriate authorities.
Governor Shukla emphasized the need for heightened security in border areas such as Indora and Nurpur, located near Pathankot. He called for strict monitoring of anti-social elements in these regions and urged that decisions be made in accordance with the central government’s evolving advisories. He also appealed to the public to remain calm, avoid rumors, and follow only official updates issued by the Government of India and the state administration.
He instructed officials to ensure that disaster response mechanisms and essential services remain fully operational to effectively handle any emergency.
C.P. Verma, Secretary to the Governor, was also present at the meeting.
