Shimla, May 7 – Himachal Pradesh continues to witness changing weather patterns, with widespread rain, strong winds, and hailstorms affecting many regions since the beginning of May. On Wednesday, showers were recorded in several areas, including the state capital, Shimla. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for the next four days, from May 8 to 11, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and rain in various parts of the state.

In Shimla, a major mishap was narrowly avoided during afternoon rain in the Lakkar Bazaar area when a tree suddenly fell onto a low-tension power line, causing an electric pole near Rivoli Road to tilt and damaging the line. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported. However, a nearby shop was partially damaged, though the two people inside managed to escape unharmed. The incident disrupted power supply in the Rivoli Feeder and Medical Hostel Feeder areas, causing inconvenience to residents.

Four-Day Yellow Alert: Gusty Winds and Lightning Expected

According to the Shimla Meteorological Centre, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely across several districts from May 8 to 11. Yellow alerts have been issued for most mid-hill and low-lying districts on May 8 and 9, with wind speeds expected to reach 40–50 km/h, and gusts potentially touching 60 km/h. All 12 districts are under yellow alert on May 8, while Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Shimla, Lahaul-Spiti, and Mandi districts remain on alert on May 9. Weather disturbances are also expected on May 10 and 11, with winds around 30–40 km/h.

Mid and Lower Hill Districts to See Most Impact

The adverse weather is expected to have a more pronounced impact on districts such as Bilaspur, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, Kullu, and Chamba, while upper hill areas like Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur are likely to remain largely unaffected.

Advisory for Farmers, Orchardists, and General Public

The Meteorological Department has advised farmers, horticulturists, and the general public to avoid outdoor activities during severe weather conditions. Farmers working in fields have been urged to stay updated with local forecasts and take necessary precautions. Travelers are also advised to check weather updates before planning their journeys.

Rainfall Recorded in the Last 24 Hours

Over the past 24 hours, several regions in the state have received rainfall. The highest was recorded in Murari Devi (51.4 mm), followed by Gulaer (34.8 mm), Sujanpur Tira (26.8 mm), Karsog (24.1 mm), Neri (23.5 mm), Gohar (21.0 mm), Nagrota Surian (20.4 mm), Sandhol (19.8 mm), Dharampur (19.6 mm), Jubbal (14.8 mm), Brahmani (12.2 mm), Sundernagar (11.8 mm), and Rohru (10.0 mm).

Typically, May brings intense heat to Himachal’s plains and mid-hill areas, but this year, persistent rain and cloud cover have kept temperatures lower. In hill stations like Shimla and Manali, cooler weather has led people to bring out warm clothing again.
