Srinagar, April 22:
A day of horror unfolded in the scenic town of Pahalgam, Kashmir, on Tuesday as terrorists opened fire on unsuspecting tourists in broad daylight. In one of the deadliest attacks in recent years, at least 26 people have been reported dead, with several others critically injured. The injured are being treated at local hospitals, and authorities fear the death toll could rise further.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic and chilling scene, where the attackers reportedly mingled with the crowd and began asking people their names before shooting them at point-blank range in the head. The assailants then fired indiscriminately before fleeing the scene. The Pakistan-backed terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba has claimed responsibility for the massacre.

Government sources have linked the attack to recent inflammatory remarks allegedly made by Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir, inciting violence against Hindus. Intelligence agencies believe the statement may have fueled terrorist groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen to escalate operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

In response to the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, held a high-level conversation with Home Minister Amit Shah, directing immediate action. Shah has since flown to Srinagar to review the situation on the ground and is scheduled to lead a high-level security meeting. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has also been briefed on the situation by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi.

Security forces have cordoned off the entire area and launched an intensive search operation, aided by drones and helicopters. A high alert has been declared across Jammu and Kashmir, and a detailed strategy is being implemented to ensure the safety of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra.

This attack is being described as the most brutal act of terrorism in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama attack. It underscores once again the continuing attempts to destabilize India. However, the country’s resolve remains stronger than ever in the face of such threats.
