Shimla, April 21 – Following strong protests by the legal fraternity, Shimla Police have suspended the constable accused of assaulting a Himachal Pradesh High Court lawyer. Shimla SP Sanjeev Gandhi confirmed that Constable Raman Thakur has been placed under suspension and a departmental inquiry has been ordered. The investigation will be led by an officer of ASP rank.

Lawyers Protest, Block Roads Outside Police Station

On Monday, hundreds of High Court lawyers staged a protest outside the Chhota Shimla Police Station and blocked the road near the State Secretariat, briefly disrupting traffic in the city. The decision to launch the protest was taken earlier during a General House meeting held in the High Court premises.

Incident Traced Back to April 12 Altercation

The controversy stems from an altercation on April 12 at Navbahar Chowk between advocate Pranav Sharma and Constable Raman Thakur. A video circulating on social media shows the constable grabbing the lawyer by the collar and slapping him, sparking widespread outrage among lawyers.

Lawyers Accuse Police of Bias

During Monday’s protest, lawyers accused the police of acting in a biased manner. They alleged that rather than taking action against the constable, police filed an FIR against the victim advocate, while the accused officer was left untouched for several days. Senior High Court advocate Shravan Dogra termed the incident an “attack on the judicial system.”

According to Constable Thakur’s complaint, the lawyer obstructed him from performing his duty and engaged in a physical scuffle that led to damage to his uniform. Police at the Chhota Shimla station have registered cases based on complaints from both sides.

The FIR based on the constable’s complaint includes sections 132, 121(1), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), while the lawyer’s complaint led to charges under sections 126(2), 115(2), and 352 of the same.
