CM Sukhu meeting Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta
Reckong Peo, April 20: In a high-level meeting that highlighted growing civil-military synergy, Surya Command GOC-in-C Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta met with Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to discuss a wide range of initiatives—from border security and strategic infrastructure to disaster response and tourism promotion.
Also present were Lt Gen DG Mishra, General Officer Commanding North India Area, and Brigadier Anurag Pandey, Commander of the Tri Peaks Brigade. The meeting underscored the Indian Army’s critical role in ensuring border safety, enhancing disaster readiness, and empowering remote Himalayan regions.
Strategic Focus: Security, Connectivity & Development
During the meeting, Lt Gen Sengupta provided a detailed brief on the current security landscape and emphasized closer coordination with local law enforcement. The Army reiterated its active role in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions, notably its swift response in the Samej Khad rescue operation in Rampura.
The Indian Army also presented proposals to further border tourism, combat outmigration from remote villages, and boost connectivity by constructing a dual-use airstrip in Spiti Valley. The airstrip would support both military operations and civilian travel, injecting new life into the region’s tourism and economy.
Proposed Infrastructure to Aid Mobility and Emergencies
Among the key discussions was a proposal for an alternate access road and ramp to the Military Hospital in Shimla, ensuring smoother evacuation routes during natural disasters and easier access for patients on regular days.
Lt Gen Sengupta also stressed the Army’s commitment to socio-economic sustainability in isolated border villages, citing initiatives to encourage reverse migration and integrate these regions into the national mainstream through improved infrastructure.
CM Sukhu Commends Army’s Role in Crisis Management
Chief Minister Sukhu lauded the Indian Army’s unwavering dedication to public service, especially during emergencies like landslides and flash floods. He acknowledged the vital role of Quick Reaction Teams and promised continued cooperation from the state in bolstering civil-military coordination.
“The Indian Army has not only safeguarded our borders but has also been a pillar of strength for the people in times of crisis,” said CM Sukhu.
The meeting also reviewed strategic road infrastructure projects, seen as essential for both national security and local development in the Himalayan state.
This collaborative dialogue reflects a broader effort to align defence strategy with regional development, fostering resilience, opportunity, and stronger national integration in Himachal’s frontier districts.
