Shimla, April 20: Himachal Pradesh is taking a big leap in modernizing its disaster response infrastructure. Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, while presiding over the closing ceremony of Fire Service Week at the State Fire Training Centre in Baldeyan, announced the recruitment of 700 new Home Guard personnel and the introduction of modern technology in the fire services department to enhance emergency response efficiency.
The event was marked by a dynamic display of firefighting and rescue demonstrations by trained personnel, showcasing their preparedness to handle real-life emergencies. The Chief Minister also flagged off 13 brand-new fire fighting vehicles, further bolstering the state’s firefighting fleet.
Honouring Bravery, Investing in Readiness
In a solemn tribute at the Shaheed Smarak, CM Sukhu announced ₹5 lakh each as financial assistance to the families of Shaheed Joginder Pal and Shaheed Ghanshyam, two fire service personnel who lost their lives during an operation in Nalagarh in 2009.
“Firefighters, home guards, and police personnel risk their lives to protect others. Their dedication deserves not only recognition but also robust support,” Sukhu stated.
The Chief Minister also honoured fire service staff for their commendable efforts during the Fire Service Week (April 14–20) and applauded their role during the natural disasters of 2023, underlining the critical need to strengthen disaster response capabilities.
Major Reforms on the Horizon
CM Sukhu used the platform to outline several initiatives aimed at making Himachal Pradesh self-reliant. He criticized the previous BJP government for alleged mismanagement and claimed that the current administration has curbed corruption and generated an additional ₹2,200 crore in revenue.
The government is also eyeing reforms in education and healthcare, with plans to introduce the CBSE curriculum in 100 government schools and upgrade the public health system.
“Our goal is to create a system that empowers people and prepares the state to handle any challenge,” Sukhu added.
Commitment to Safety and Progress
The fire safety exhibition organized at the event showcased new technologies and rescue equipment, which the Chief Minister visited with keen interest. A ceremonial parade led by Nitin Dhiman concluded the program, with CM Sukhu taking the salute.
Director of Fire Services Satwant Atwal briefed the gathering about departmental advancements, while dignitaries like Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, Rural Development Minister Anirudh Singh, Mayor Surinder Chauhan, and OSD to CM Gopal Sharma also marked their presence.
With stronger fire services, modernized infrastructure, and fresh recruitments, Himachal Pradesh is setting the foundation for a safer, more resilient future—where lives are protected, and every emergency is met with swift action and confidence.
