Mandi Stands Firm on Shanan Project: Punjab Asked to Withdraw Claim Immediately
Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri says Himachal won’t concede even an inch of historic Jogindernagar project
Mandi, April 15 – Tensions over the century-old Shanan Power Project in Jogindernagar escalated on Himachal Day as Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri made it clear that Himachal Pradesh will not hand over the project to Punjab under any circumstances. Addressing a large crowd during the district-level celebrations at Mandi, Agnihotri reaffirmed that the 99-year lease period ended in March 2024, and now the project rightfully belongs to Himachal.
“This is not an issue related to the Punjab Reorganization Act. Mandi was never a part of Punjab,” said Agnihotri. “If Punjab truly considers Himachal its brother, it should return the project without delay. We will not back down — not even an inch.”
He pointed out that Punjab and Haryana had made similar claims in the past, but the Supreme Court had rejected Haryana’s demand. The Himachal government, under the Congress leadership, has already submitted its full claim before the court, asserting complete ownership of the project.
Agnihotri also touched on another unresolved issue — a pending ₹3,000 crore claim from the reorganization dispute that has remained unsettled for over 13 years. “Even after winning the case in 2011, we haven’t received our dues. It’s high time justice is done,” he added.
The Deputy CM criticized the lack of support from the Centre, especially during natural disasters, despite Himachal contributing immensely to India’s environmental balance and water resources. “Our rivers quench the thirst of many states. We protect forests and nature. Yet we are neglected when help is needed most,” he said.
Earlier in the ceremony, he paid floral tributes at the Shaheed Smarak and garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, followed by flag hoisting and a ceremonial parade. School children presented vibrant cultural performances filled with patriotism. Exceptional contributors to society and public service were also honored during the function.
The event was attended by MLAs, former ministers, senior officials, and hundreds of citizens, marking a spirited Himachal Day celebration with a clear message: Himachal won’t compromise on its rights.
