Shimla, 6 April: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) marked its foundation day today with a ceremony held at the party’s headquarters at Deepakmal Chakar in Shimla. During the event, the party paid tribute to its founding leaders, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, by offering flowers. The event was attended by Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur along with other BJP leaders and workers.

Jairam Thakur took the opportunity to highlight the achievements of the BJP on its foundation day, stating, “Today, BJP is not only the largest party in the country but also the largest in the world. We have BJP and NDA governments in 21 states, and for the third consecutive time, BJP has formed the government at the center. This is a matter of pride for us.” He emphasized the sacrifices made by the party’s founders, expressing gratitude and respect for their efforts in establishing the party.

However, Thakur also used the occasion to criticize the Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu-led state government over its recent decisions, particularly the doubling of the minimum bus fare. He described the increase in bus fare from ₹5 to ₹10 as a “cruel decision” that would heavily burden the common people, especially the poor. Thakur added, “Buses are the primary means of transportation in Himachal Pradesh, and this hike directly impacts the pockets of the people. The Sukhu government, in its disregard for its own 10 guarantees, continues to make decisions that are causing distress to the public.”

Thakur further accused the Sukhu government of stifling the pace of development in the state, particularly in the power sector, where Himachal Pradesh is known for its abundant hydroelectric potential. He alleged that the government was undermining the state’s energy sector by mishandling hydro projects, a move that could have long-term consequences for the state’s economy.

In his address, Thakur also brought up the Vimal Negi case, demanding a CBI inquiry into the allegations surrounding the former official’s death. He claimed that a nexus of leaders and officials in the power sector was responsible for scams, and Vimal Negi had become a victim of this corruption. He expressed concern that the cause of Negi’s death remains unclear, with questions about whether it was a murder or a suicide, yet the state government had failed to take any action. “The family of Vimal Negi is constantly demanding a CBI inquiry, but the government has not taken any steps to address the matter,” Thakur added.

The BJP’s foundation day celebrations in Shimla not only marked a moment of reflection on the party’s journey but also set the tone for the political debate surrounding the current government’s policies and actions in Himachal Pradesh.
