Shimla, April 4: A controversial comment made by Hamirpur MP and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur regarding Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge has ignited a political firestorm in Himachal Pradesh. In response to Thakur’s remarks in Parliament, Congress workers staged a strong protest in Shimla, expressing their anger against the BJP leader. The protest took place near the Deputy Commissioner’s office, with party leaders such as Congress state president Pratibha Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, and Cabinet Minister Vikramaditya Singh participating in the demonstration.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri condemned Thakur’s comment, describing him as a figure with a history of controversial statements. “Anurag Thakur has always been at the center of controversies. His remarks in Parliament were no surprise. It’s wrong to expect decency from him,” Agnihotri remarked. He further alleged that the BJP, led by Thakur, was intentionally targeting Mallikarjun Kharge and the Gandhi family, highlighting that Kharge, a senior and respected Member of Parliament, was unfairly humiliated by Thakur’s comments.
Pratibha Singh, the Congress state president, also joined in the criticism. She called Anurag Thakur’s remarks “indecent” and stated that such comments have no place in political discourse. “It is unfortunate that a senior leader like Mallikarjun Kharge has been subjected to this kind of insult. We strongly condemn Thakur’s statement,” Singh said. The Congress leader also echoed Kharge’s demand for Thakur’s resignation, a call that has now gained significant traction among the party’s supporters in the state.
The protest in Shimla underscores the growing political tension between the Congress and the BJP, with both parties locking horns over the exchange in Parliament. Congress leaders have vowed to continue their fight for dignity in politics, with Kharge’s supporters calling for greater respect for senior political figures.
As the controversy continues to simmer, the situation in Himachal Pradesh remains tense, with Congress asserting that Thakur’s remarks are part of a broader strategy by the BJP to undermine key opposition leaders. The outcome of this political showdown could have significant implications for the upcoming electoral battles in the state.
