Encouraging Sports Essential to Combat Drug Abuse: Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla
Shimla, March 24: Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla emphasized the need to encourage sports to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse among the youth. He presided over a seminar on “Strategy to Promote Sports Culture to Curb the Evil of Drug Abuse,” organized by Shyamala Education and Social Welfare Trust at the Gaiety Theatre in Shimla.
During the seminar, the Governor expressed deep concern over the negative impact of drug abuse on the future generation, stating that it not only hampers the potential of the youth but also isolates them from society. “Drug abuse is a silent destroyer, robbing young people of their talent, breaking families, and weakening the very fabric of our society,” the Governor said. He added that drug addiction leads to mental, social, and economic problems, increasing crime rates and putting undue pressure on the healthcare system.
Collective Action Required to Combat the Evil
Governor Shukla stressed that combating drug abuse requires the active participation of all segments of society. He called for a collaborative effort from parents, teachers, the police, the health department, and the public to curb this issue. “This evil can only be eradicated with collective resolve and strong willpower,” he said. He further highlighted the importance of coordination among various government departments and community participation, particularly in schools, colleges, and university campuses, where youth are most vulnerable.
He pointed out that in a progressive and educated state like Himachal Pradesh, youth power should be directed towards innovation, sports, and nation-building, not indulging in harmful practices like drug abuse. He praised the public awareness campaigns in Arki and Nalagarh in Solan district and Hamirpur district, which successfully raised awareness about the dangers of drug abuse while promoting sports among the youth.
The Role of Sports in Preventing Drug Addiction
Governor Shukla strongly advocated for the role of sports in preventing drug addiction. He stated that encouraging youth participation in sports not only promotes physical fitness but also instills discipline, team spirit, and resilience, which can significantly reduce the likelihood of drug abuse. “A healthy lifestyle, participation in social work, and positive role models are essential in shaping the future of our youth,” the Governor remarked.
As part of the event, the Governor released a report on the survey conducted by Shyamala Education and Social Welfare Trust, which explored the role of sports culture in combating the menace of drugs and addiction. The report sheds light on how integrating sports into the community can create a protective shield for young people against the lure of drugs.
Honoring Individuals for Their Contribution
During the seminar, the Governor honored nine individuals for their outstanding contributions to raising awareness against drug abuse. These honorees were recognized for their tireless efforts in promoting health, wellness, and the importance of a drug-free society.
In a significant move to further the cause, the Governor also administered an oath to attendees, pledging to raise awareness and fight against drug abuse. Additionally, he announced a new initiative at Himachal Pradesh University, where a column has been added to the admission form, requiring students to declare their commitment to remain drug-free.
A Unified Effort Against Drug Abuse
The event was attended by a range of dignitaries, including Vice Chancellor of Central University Dharamshala and Himachal Pradesh University, Prof. SP Bansal, Secretary to Governor Chandra Prakash Verma, Major Ritu Kalra, and other members of the Shyamala Education and Social Welfare Trust. The Trust has been actively involved in organizing various programs to combat drug abuse and promote healthy living.
Governor Shukla’s speech reinforced the urgent need for a united effort to create a drug-free society and the crucial role sports can play in that mission. He concluded by urging the people of Himachal Pradesh to stand together in this battle against drug addiction, fostering a future for youth that is filled with opportunities, good health, and a sense of purpose.
