Shimla, March 22, 2025: In a significant development for Himachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi today to discuss the aftermath of the devastating monsoon of 2023, which caused widespread damage across the state. During the meeting, the Chief Minister urged the Union Minister to expedite the release of compensation for the massive losses suffered by the state during the severe natural calamity.
The monsoon rains of 2023 wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh, causing significant damage to infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods. Several roads, bridges, and irrigation schemes were severely affected, while drinking water supply systems were also compromised. The state government immediately sprang into action, launching relief and rehabilitation measures, but Chief Minister Sukhu pointed out that the financial assistance from the central government, under the Post-Disaster Need Assessment (PDNA), had not yet been provided.
In his meeting with Amit Shah, CM Sukhu highlighted the urgent need for central assistance to repair and rebuild the state’s damaged infrastructure, which is crucial for the livelihood of its people. “The loss in terms of infrastructure, drinking water, and irrigation schemes has been colossal. Our resources were stretched thin as we worked to provide immediate relief, but the central government’s timely intervention is critical for long-term recovery,” Sukhu stated.
The Chief Minister detailed the extensive rehabilitation efforts carried out by the state government, including the restoration of essential services and the repair of vital infrastructure. However, he emphasized that the resources available to the state were not sufficient to cover the long-term costs associated with recovery and rebuilding.
During the meeting, Sukhu also discussed a variety of issues of concern for the state, focusing on the broader interests of Himachal Pradesh. The Chief Minister expressed his hope that the Union Government would recognize the urgency of the situation and respond promptly to the state’s needs. “The support of the Central Government will make a significant difference in the recovery process. We are confident that with Amit Shah’s assurance, the much-needed financial relief will be expedited,” he added.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in response, acknowledged the gravity of the situation and assured the Chief Minister that the Centre would provide all possible assistance to Himachal Pradesh. Shah expressed his commitment to ensuring that the state receives the necessary support to overcome the challenges posed by the disaster. He further assured the Chief Minister that the government was taking steps to process the required compensation and would act swiftly to address the state’s post-disaster needs.
Accompanying the Chief Minister during the meeting was Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue Omkar Chand Sharma, who also contributed to the discussions. The presence of senior officials underscored the significance of the talks, particularly in addressing the long-term recovery needs of the state.
The meeting between CM Sukhu and Union Home Minister Shah comes at a crucial juncture for Himachal Pradesh, as the state grapples with the aftermath of one of the worst monsoons in recent history. The timely intervention of the central government will play a pivotal role in ensuring the state’s recovery and rebuilding efforts are not hampered further.
Himachal Pradesh has long been vulnerable to natural disasters, with landslides, floods, and heavy rainfall being frequent challenges. The state’s fragile infrastructure and mountainous terrain exacerbate the impact of such calamities, making it essential for both the state and central governments to work in close coordination to address disaster preparedness and recovery.
As the recovery process continues, the people of Himachal Pradesh will be hopeful that the commitments made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah will translate into real, on-the-ground assistance.
