Shimla, Mar 11, 2025 – In a significant milestone towards strengthening the green energy framework of the country, SJVN Limited has entered into a landmark MOU with Government of Chhattisgarh and Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL) for development of 1800 MW Kotpali Pumped Storage Project (PSP). The MOU signing ceremony, which was attended by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Vishnu Deo Sai, is a major step forward in the state’s dreams for renewable energy.

Sushil Kumar Sharma, Director (Projects), SJVN, Subodh Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary, Chhattisgarh Energy Department, and Sanjeev Kumar Katiyar, Managing Director, CSPGCL signed the MOU. SJVN Chairman & Managing Director, Nand Lal Sharma, accompanied by senior officials from both SJVN and the Government of Chhattisgarh graced the ceremony underlining the significance behind this collaborative initiative.

Important Features of Kotpali Pumped Storage Project

The Kotpali Pumped Storage Project will be built in Balrampur district of Chhattisgarh. This project is an off-stream, closed-loop type pumped storage project that aims to improve grid stability and amplifies renewable energy in the power supply chain. The project will have an installed capacity of 1800 MW and will produce approximately 3967 million units of electricity a year.

At the core of pumped storage lies the role it plays in modern energy systems, particularly with growing reliance on intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. The project in Kotpali will reserve energy when there is not high usage and then discharge power when demand becomes high, leading to consistent energy access. In this system, energy security and power grid stability will be further improved as the risk of grid outages and energy crises will be mitigated with the right resources in place.

Economic and Employment Impacts

With Rs.9500 crore investment, this project will generate large scale employment. The Kotpali Pumped Storage Project is expected to provide employment – directly and indirectly – to some 5000 people. This will provide a big push to the economy of Chhattisgarh and will also propel it in the renewable energy sector.

In addition, the project will bolster the state’s renewable energy infrastructure, making it a more appealing place for future investments. Projects at the scale of energy like Kotpali, being developed currently are again in line with India’s goals of net-zero emissions and a sustainable energy future.

Renewable Energy: Towards a Sustainable Future

The MOU is a step forward in pursuit of SJVN’s mission to strengthen its renewable portfolio as well as assist India’s energy transition. Renewable energy is playing an increasingly prominent role in the energy mix, and pumped storage projects like Kotpali can help manage intermittency, providing a buffer that enables a climb to meet the growing demand for electricity.

Upon becoming operational, the Kotpali PSP will play a vital role in India’s vision of energy sustainability and carbon neutrality, helping to absorb and integrate renewable energy sources such as solar and wind generation into the national grid.

The Kotpali Pumped Storage Project shall transform the renewable energy landscape of Chhattisgarh and India. With this successful execution, SJVN aims to be an active participant in the energy sector both in terms of development and innovation, as this project aligns perfectly with larger schemes that require pumped storage for grid stabilization and harmonization of energy flows from renewable sources. With enormous investments and job creation, the project is slated to accelerate Chhattisgarh’s economy and propel India’s drive towards its net-zero aspirations.
