Dharamshala, March 6: In a bid to boost family income while ensuring positive health for people, three women from the Kangra district—Lakshmi Devi, Parveen Kumari and Asha Devi—have emerged as successful producer of health-oriented products. These stories of entrepreneurship reflect the impact of self-sufficiency and invention.

Making a point: Lakshmi Devi, a farm-originator Dharamshala resident, noted how increasingly worrisome the food products available in the market can be. Eager to do her bit, she became part of an Akanksha Self Help Group the National Rural Livelihood Mission. Eventually, Lakshmi started making healthy ragi and semolina momos with the training she got. These healthy momos were not just loved by everyone around, but also proved to be a steady source of income for her. She also opened the Him Ira shop in Dharamshala, where she sells her own products alongside those sold by other self-help groups, which helped her grow her business further. Today Lakshmi is a self-employed entrepreneur who earns really well, is able to live a dignified life.

Likewise, Parveen Kumari, who belongs to a family of farmers, coming from financial constraints in Baijnath, transformed her fortune by growing coarse cereals or small millets, such as millet, ragi, and sorghum. When she joined the Vaibhav Laxmi Self Help Group, she was trained in the production of nutritious products and selling them, which allowed her to earn a stable income of ₹18,000-₹20,000 every month. Her success story also inspires other women in the region to achieve self-dependence.

One of them, Asha Devi of Paddar associated with the Abhilasha Self Help Group, has concentrated on making Tulsi tea, extract, soap etc. Guided by the group with a bank loan, Asha was able to invest in machines that brought more organization to her work and productivity. With earnings of ₹15,000-₹20,000 monthly, Asha is now financially independent with increased demand for her products.

Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa said that emphasis is being laid on women self-help groups to provide adequate training, branding and marketing to them. The district is helping women grow their businesses to strengthen their economic standing, with projects like the Him Ira shop and a dedicated website for online sales.
