Shimla, March 3 – The State Cabinet of Himachal Pradesh, led by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, met today and decided on various important matters including giving its consent for the appointment to 145 posts of new Municipal Corporations, Councils and Panchayats of the state. These decisions, in turn, are likely to improve and make local governance functions and processes more productive and economically viable to provide essential aid and sustenance to expanding administrative units at both urban and rural levels.

The Cabinet on Monday approved the creation and filling of a total of 145 posts in different categories in a significant move to strengthen local administration and enhance public services. Of these, 66 posts will be given to the newly upgraded Municipal Corporations and three posts in Municipal Councils. 70 new posts have been created for the newly formed Nagar Panchayats and six more posts will be filled in the Directorate of Urban Development Department. The initiative showcases the commitment of the government to enhance urban infrastructure and services throughout the state of Himachal Pradesh.

The Cabinet also granted approval for the creation of two Senior Resident Doctor posts for the Department of Gastroenterology in Atal Super Speciality Medical Institute, Chamiyana in Shimla. While these new posts will enable the delivery of better health care, particularly in the specialty area, they will continue to build a strong health care system in the state.

The Cabinet meeting also brainstormed ways to improve the state’s industrial and regulatory climate. The Cabinet made a significant decision for forced conversion of Katha Bhattis (wood kilns) into Katha Bhattis with IBR (Indian Boiler Regulation) boilers. The overhaul aims to modernize the procedure to improve efficiency and strengthen safety standards. The new Katha Bhattis will now have to be mandatorily registered with Chief Boiler Inspector of the State. Sap Wood (Khair wood with bark) would now be allowed to be processed in IBR boilers in a quantity ranging from 5435 to 7500 quintals per annum, which is likely to give a fillip to the wood processing industry of the state.

These decisions are part of the larger template of the state government to enhance public services, contribute to economic growth, and the effective functioning of newly created local bodies and departments. New posts are being created with a view to improve the demand for administrative efficiency in developing urban and rural areas by the government.

Presiding over the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed satisfaction over the decisions, and said that this move would usher the transformative local governance landscape. “These measures will empower municipal corporations, councils and Panchayats to address the ever-increasing demands of citizens,” Sukhu mentioned that the approval of these medical posts and modernization of wood processing industry speaks volumes of our commitment towards public health and economic growth.”

Besides these administrative and infrastructural decisions, the Cabinet also approved the draft of the Governor’s address for the 8th session of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly to be held on March 10, 2025. The tabling of the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General for 2023-24 was also approved for discussion in the scheduled session, which is likely to set out major financial and policy trajectories for the state.

Both these decisions reflect a continued resolve of the state government to strengthen public infrastructure and services with a timeline both in governance and economic development. As Himachal Pradesh progresses, these strategic steps will prove to be pivotal in determining the state’s development trajectory.
