Midnight operation by Baddi police, JCB and Tipper seized during illegal mining
JCB and tipper vehicle seized
Solan, February 27: Baddi Police had seized a JCB and a tipper truck in routine patrol near Bald Khad bridge, in wake of illegal mining activities. The vehicles were detained during an overnight operation to combat the illegal extraction of gravel from government land in the region.
The operation occurred late at night when police officers on patrol discovered the vehicles in the act of illegally digging gravel. However, the JCB, being driven by Rakesh Kumar from Chamba in Himachal Pradesh, the tipper truck being driven by Sumit Sharma from Kalka in Haryana, failed to produce any valid documents for their working. This resulted in the immediate seizure of the vehicles.
Baddi Police have slapped a case against the two under sections of Mining and Mineral Act. These include the crime of illegally extracting minerals under the Section 303(2) of these respective acts, under Section 3(5) of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) Act relating to illegal mining activities along with Section 21 of the Mining and Mineral Act. Either driver now faces criminal repercussions for their participation within the illegal mining activities.
Vinod Dhiman, Superintendent of Police (SP) Baddi, stated that strict action would be taken against all those involved in illegal mining. He stressed that stealing minerals is not only constrained by law but also it brings up a considerable damage to the environment. The department will continue to do everything it can to limit this activity, and it will remain on the lookout for more violations in the future.
Dhiman also appealed through public to maintain vigilance and report any illegal mining activity they would come across. “We assure the community that any information provided by informers will be well guarded to protect their identity,” he stated. They are looking to develop a network of informants to support increased work against illegal mining which poses a risk to the environment and local communities.
This is part of a larger drive against illegal mining launched by the Baddi Police in the region. “Unlawful mining operations are depleting natural resources and leaving environmental devastation in their wake, and authorities have been growing more and more concerned about the damage being wrought.”
Illegal mining has persisted in the area, and miners continue to dig up in the absence of government regulation that would require they obtain a license for such activities. Rivers and land are depleted because of such unchecked activities, which destroy the ecological balance. These operations however seek to reduce the detrimental effects of illegal mining by pursuing offenders.
Officials have called on the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. They can help preserve the environment and promote the law of nature. The Baddi Police is determined to act tough against illegal mining and continue to ensure that whoever is found involved in such illegal activities would be punished as per law.
The authorities have said they have more such actions planned in the weeks ahead that are part of a broader crackdown against this illegal practice that poses a risk to the environment.
