United Kingdom-Himachal Pradesh Partnership: Collaboration on Key Sectors
Shimla, February 19: In a bid to strengthen bilateral ties, a delegation of British Deputy High Commission met Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu here on Monday. The discussions during the meeting, which was held in Chandigarh, focused on expanding collaborations in various sectors including technology, agriculture, tourism and sustainability.
The UK delegation was head by the Deputy High Commissioner Caroline Rowett and was supported by UK Government Political, Press and Projects adviser Rajinder S. Nagarkoti. The visit was part of continued efforts to develop and grow the relationship between the two areas. The delegation updated on ongoing initiatives during the meeting and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in priority sectors of mutual interest.
Looking at Possible Cross-Sector Partnerships
The round of discussions focussed on the areas with the highest potential of collaboration, particularly with respect of sectors that are most consistent with the growth priorities of Himachal Pradesh. Sukhu expressed keen interest in collaborating with UK in AgriTech, green hydrogen, electric vehicles (EVs), tourism, dairy, food processing, data storage and water resource management.
Himachal Pradesh provides the UK with a unique opportunity to invest in these industries due to its rich natural resources and strategic location, Sukhu said. He stressed the need to make use of UK expertise in these sectors to stimulate industrial growth, job creation and sustainable development. The state government aims to advance improvements in both, ideally developing a flavor of innovation in relation to the changes are such that long-term benefits accrue to the local population, as well as the wider atmosphere in the framework of AgriTech and full green energy technologies.

The Chief Minister also highlighted growing global attention towards cutting carbon emissions and transitioning to sustainable energy sources, adding that he was interested in exploring opportunities for collaboration with the UK, a global leader in clean energy. The UK has taken a lead in the development and application of green hydrogen technologies, while renewable energy resources in Himachal Pradesh makes it an ideal place for pilot projects.
Furthermore, the increasing demand for electric vehicles in India offers a possibility for the UK to collaborate with Himachal Pradesh in the development and adoption of EV infrastructure. This would only come in line with the state government reducing pollution and making arrangements for a greener environment for the people of the state, as per the Chief Minister.
Fortifying Tourism And Creating Investments
Tourism is still a significant industry for the economy of Himachal Pradesh and the state wants to utilize the global tourism market. The Chief Minister told that there were ample opportunities for the United Kingdom to invest in tourism infrastructure, especially in the sectors of eco-tourism and adventure tourism, in which sectors Himachal Pradesh had an inherent advantage. The United Kingdom has one of the biggest and fastest-growing outbound tourist markets in the world, and with our beautiful topography, rich culture and heritage, Himachal Pradesh certainly has a feast for both domestic as well as international tourists, added the CM.
UK Deputy High Commissioner Caroline Rowett visited the state to not only acknowledge the increasing interest of UK businesses in Himachal Pradesh as well as showcase some of the prominent UK investments in the state. Post the meeting, Chief Minister Sukhu instructed the relevent government officials to liaise with the UK delegation and ensure further deliberations on the proposed collaborations. Sukhu further assured that the state government was committed to providing enabling environment for foreign investment and said all the required regulatory framework and incentives were given to attract UK businesses. He expressed hope that the relations between Himachal Pradesh and the UK would further strengthen and would definitely be proving on a long way for adding value to the development in various sectors.
