Kangra: Block Development Officer Arrested For Demanding Bribe of ₹10,000
Dharamshala, February 18: Taking a huge step in fighting corruption the Himachal Pradesh State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (SVACB) has arrested the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Paragpur Virendra Kumar for accepting a bribe of ₹10,000. The arrest, which occurred on February 17, had received extensive media coverage and is a reminder of the continuing battle for clean public administration in the state.
It was further stated that the BDO had demanded a bribe from Reena Devi the Pradhan (head) of Gram Panchayat Kadoa. The complaint by Reena Devi had alleged that the BDO had demanded the amount to get ₹1.5 lakh of government funds released, which had been sanctioned by the office of the deputy commissioner, Kangra. The money was released for the Panchayat’s construction work that had been stalled as a result of the officer’s actions.
On being approached for the bribe, Reena Devi informed the State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau and filed a complaint. The Bureau, immediately registering a complaint, laid a trap and caught the accused Virendra Kumar red handed while accepting the money of bribe. The whole operation was executed in high precision resulting in the immediate arrest of the officer in question at the scene.
The Vigilance Bureau has registered a case against him under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, for taking undue advantage as a public servant after the arrest. Currently, the authorities are working on investigating the situation.
This arrest is touted to be one of the first big action of 2025 by the Vigilance Bureau, which is likely to serve as a message against corrupt practices in government departments. The arrest has not only raised questions about the extent of corruption within local government offices, but prompted the authorities to consider broadening their probe. They are also likely to assess the movable and immovable assets of the held officer, as they believe this could lead to the discovery of more illegal property amassed worriedly.
On the local level, both residents and political leaders have responded on social media, voicing their shock and questioning the actions of a public servant who was meant to be a steward of the community. They have been blamed for being ineffectual against corruption, especially those at municipal levels of government, where such practices have become endemic.
The arrest has also engendered a sense of fear among other officials in the government as it both indicative of the Vigilance Bureau’s determination to eradicate corruption at all levels of administration. Corruption is often viewed as an endemic problem within multiple public sectors, so the authorities’ swift response in this case has been viewed favorably as a measure of accountability.
The government is under increasing pressure to demonstrate a commitment to transparency and due process as the investigation continues. This case was in line with the larger policy of the authorities to eliminate corruption in Himachal Pradesh and make their administration transparent.
