Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], January 10 (Diary Times): The Himachali Gaddi Dog has earned official recognition as an indigenous breed by the National Bureau of Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBAGR) in Karnal, under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. This landmark recognition not only highlights the breed’s unique heritage but also marks a significant milestone, making the Gaddi Dog the first breed from the Himalayan region and the fourth indigenous dog breed to be registered in India.

This prestigious recognition is the result of tireless efforts by scientists from the Agriculture University and officials from the Animal Husbandry Department, who meticulously gathered scientific evidence to showcase the breed’s distinct traits. The Gaddi Dog, named after the Gaddi tribe renowned for herding sheep and goats, plays an integral role in the region’s pastoral lifestyle. These resilient dogs not only help shepherds manage and safeguard livestock but also form deep, loyal bonds with their human counterparts, further cementing their place in Himachal’s rich cultural tapestry.

Dr. Navin Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the dedicated team of scientists and Dr. Ravindra Kumar, Dean of Dr. G.C. Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, for their pivotal role in achieving this historic recognition. He also highlighted the university’s ongoing commitment to preserving the Gaddi Dog breed, underscoring their efforts through the establishment of an External Conservation Unit at the Veterinary College to ensure the breed’s long-term survival and prosperity.

The conservation unit, backed by the Animal Husbandry Department and the Himachal Pradesh Council of Science, Technology, and Environment, plays a crucial role in safeguarding the Gaddi Dog. By providing puppies to local shepherds and dog enthusiasts, the initiative not only supports the breed’s preservation but also helps elevate its cultural and economic value. This effort ensures the Gaddi Dog continues to thrive, maintaining its vital connection to the region’s pastoral heritage while also fostering community engagement.
