Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], January 10 (Diary Times): Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) is actively working to tackle its growing expenses by introducing a range of new revenue-generation initiatives. One key move is the revival of its plan to set up an in-house printing press, which will help curb rising costs and open up fresh revenue streams. While the concept was explored in the past, it was never fully realized. However, the current university administration is now determined to bring this plan to fruition.

On Thursday, the Resource Mobilization Committee, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. SP Bansal, convened to explore strategies for generating additional resources for the university. A key focus of the meeting was the establishment of an in-house printing press. At present, HPU incurs substantial costs by outsourcing its printing requirements, but the proposed printing press is expected to significantly reduce these expenses with a one-time investment.

In addition, the university has made the decision to slash fares for its transport services, setting them at 50% of the rates charged by the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC). To further improve efficiency and reduce costs, the university plans to outsource its transport services through a competitive tender process, ensuring both cost-effectiveness and high-quality service.

The university is actively looking for ways to generate additional income from its underutilized assets. One such opportunity involves renting out the Center for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) building in Noida, which is currently not being fully utilized. In addition to this, the university plans to explore further revenue-generating possibilities from the building’s premises to optimize its potential and maximize returns.

Prof. Bansal highlighted that once the proposed initiatives are put into action, the university could generate an additional ₹50 crore annually. As part of the strategy, HPU will introduce a small fee for students to help cover the operational costs of its online services. Additionally, newly constructed shops on the campus will be leased out, further contributing to the university’s growing revenue stream.

To strengthen its financial position, HPU is reconsidering the expansion of its Ghanahati campus. This development would allow for the introduction of additional professional courses and improve student amenities, including hostel facilities. The expansion is expected to not only enhance the university’s offerings but also contribute to a broader revenue base.

These initiatives form a key component of HPU’s broader plan to strengthen its financial sustainability, ensuring that the university can maintain its high standards of education and services while reducing its dependence on external funding. Through these efforts, HPU aims to create a more self-sufficient future for its students and faculty.
