Government Initiatives and Efforts

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu credited the reduction in accidents and fatalities to the collective efforts of the government, law enforcement agencies, and citizens. Over the past two years, the state government has implemented several measures to protect lives, including awareness campaigns promoting responsible driving, improvements in road infrastructure, and the introduction of safety measures in accident-prone areas. The government’s focus on enforcing traffic rules and strengthening the emergency response system has also been pivotal in reducing road-related incidents.

National Context

While Himachal Pradesh saw positive results, the national picture was less encouraging. In 2023, India experienced an increase in road accidents and fatalities, with approximately 1.73 lakh deaths and over 4.63 lakh injuries. This alarming statistic translates to an average of 474 deaths per day, or one life lost every three minutes. The official figures for road accidents in India for 2024 are yet to be released but are expected later this year.

Future Plans for Road Safety

Looking ahead, Chief Minister Sukhu assured that road safety will remain a top priority for the state government. Efforts to further reduce accidents will continue, with plans for additional measures to enhance safety. He urged citizens to follow traffic rules, avoid speeding, and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure safer roads.

In closing, Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized the importance of public participation in the mission to build safer roads. The state government remains committed to the safety of its people and will continue to take all necessary steps to improve road safety throughout Himachal Pradesh.
