Vigilance Steps Up Probe Into Theog Water Supply Scam, Suspended Officials Interrogated
Shimla: The Vigilance Department has stepped up its investigation in the alleged water supply scam in Theog, Shimla district, involving irregularities in payments for provisions of drinking water through tankers. The vigilance wing on Monday questioned seven suspended Jal Shakti Department officials and a contractor at Vigilance Headquarters in Shimla. Other questioning of others is planned for Wednesday.
The Vigilance team has taken significant records from the SDM office in Theog as well as from the Vigilance Department. Officials also examined the water source mentioned by the contractor to confirm the claims regarding the water supply. ASP Vigilance Narveer Singh Rathore, who is heading the investigation, highlighted the team’s commitment to gathering thorough evidence to pinpoint everyone involved.
The situation came to light after claims emerged that payments were made for water supplies that never actually happened. Additionally, it was discovered that some vehicle registration numbers provided for water tanker services belonged to motorcycles and cars, which raised suspicions of fraudulent activity.

In response to these allegations, the state government suspended 10 officials from the Jal Shakti Department, including two executives, three assistants, four junior officials, and a retired junior engineer. One of those suspended has since passed away. The government is taking the matter seriously and has assigned the Vigilance Department to conduct the investigation.
The alleged scam reportedly dates back to February through June of the previous year when Theog faced a severe drought. The Jal Shakti Department had contracted water supply services via tankers to tackle the crisis. However, reports indicate that water was not delivered to several areas despite payments being made, raising concerns about widespread corruption.
The Vigilance Department is currently carrying out a preliminary inquiry. If any evidence of corruption is found, a formal case will be opened. Officials are remaining tight-lipped about the findings due to the ongoing investigation.
