Over 500 Outsourced Employees Go on Strike at IGMC Shimla Following Termination of 132 Workers
More than 500 outsourced employees on indefinite strike
Protest Sparks Unrest in State’s Largest Hospital as Staff Demand Reinstatement of Fired Workers
Shimla, January 03 – Over 500 outsourced employees at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, have gone on indefinite strike today in protest against the termination of 132 workers by the hospital administration. The IGMC’s decision to sever the services of the outsourced staff, effective from January 1, has triggered unrest, with workers demanding the immediate reinstatement of those fired.
According to Virendra Lal, President of the Contract Union, the 132 workers who were dismissed had been serving at the hospital for the past four years. These employees, who performed critical roles during the COVID-19 pandemic, are now being let go without notice, despite their long service and dedication. Lal confirmed that the strike includes various categories of staff such as cleaning personnel, ward attendants, and data entry operators. However, emergency services at the hospital are still functioning, albeit under limited capacity.
Lal further stated that a meeting was held between the union representatives and the IGMC administration to discuss the matter, but no resolution was reached. He emphasized that the strike would continue until the dismissed workers are reinstated to their positions.

Among the terminated employees, many are female workers, with over 70% of the outsourced staff being women. The dismissed women workers voiced their concerns, saying that their livelihoods, along with the well-being of their families, were heavily reliant on their jobs at the hospital. They expressed frustration over the unexpected decision and the financial strain it has placed on their lives.
The situation has brought attention to the vulnerability of outsourced workers in government institutions and their struggle to secure job stability. With no immediate solution in sight, the strike at IGMC Shimla remains ongoing, as workers demand justice for their dismissed colleagues.
