Hamirpur – Taking a decisive step to curb illegal mining in Hamirpur district, the government has closed five crushers and imposed a hefty fine of crores of rupees. These crushers were found involved in illegal mining activities, which were digging in the ravines of the district in an unscientific manner and causing extensive damage to the environment.

The mining department seized two crushers in Pung ravine, two in Shukkar ravine of Barsar and one in Jolaspad of Naidun. All five crushers were operating without proper authorization, increasing the problem of illegal mining in the area. Despite these actions, illegal mining continues unabated in many areas of the district including Pung, Paploh and Sir ravines.

Illegal miners are extracting sand, gravel and stones from these ravines and using tractor trolleys and trucks to transport the material. Mining operations in Paploh Khad are dangerously close to the Public Works Department bridge, threatening to damage critical infrastructure. In Pung Khad, the situation has worsened to such an extent that the water has completely drained out of the khad due to excessive digging.

Despite the action, illegal mining continues in Seerr Khad, where heavy machinery such as Poclain are being used. Complaints are coming in from local residents, yet the enforcement efforts made by mining inspectors and local police are inadequate to completely stop these activities.

District Mining Officer Dinesh Koundal confirmed the closure of five crushers and imposition of fines. He also acknowledged receiving complaints about illegal mining in Pung, Seer and Paploh Khads, assuring that strict action will continue to be taken to tackle the issue and prevent further damage to the environment.
