Shimla, August 31: Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) cameras installed in Himachal Pradesh are proving to be very effective in curbing speeding on the roads of the state. So far this year, about Rs 4 crore fine has been collected from drivers violating traffic rules, thanks to these advanced monitoring systems.

A total of 66 ITMS cameras have been installed on national highways, four-lane roads and state highways across the region. These cameras are specially designed to detect and penalize speeding drivers, who have been found to be the main cause of road accidents in the state.

Investigation of road accidents in Himachal Pradesh has revealed that negligence of drivers, especially speeding, is the main cause of these accidents. ITMS cameras monitor the speed of vehicles in real time and automatically issue challans to those driving above the speed limit. Apart from targeting speed limit violators, these cameras are also being used to enforce the use of seat belts among drivers and passengers.

ASP Narveer Thakur stressed the police department’s continuous efforts to ensure road safety. He said, “With the help of ITMS cameras, we have collected fines worth about Rs 4 crore from drivers violating rules. The police is committed to promote road safety and reduce accidents across the state.”

To further enhance road safety, dedicated police teams have been deployed at the district level to monitor traffic and prevent accidents. These teams work from control rooms set up in each district, where they constantly monitor the traffic situation and issue challans to rule breakers identified by ITMS cameras.

Himachal Pradesh Police is equipping its patrol units with modern vehicles to enable them to target speeding drivers and other traffic violators more effectively. This initiative is part of the broader goal to promote road safety and reduce the frequency of accidents in the state.

The installation of ITMS cameras and the subsequent enforcement action underscore the state’s commitment to creating safer roads for all residents and visitors. The police urge all drivers to follow traffic rules and drive responsibly to help achieve this goal.
