Municipal Corporation to disconnect power and water supply of ISBT Shimla for non-payment of property tax
Shimla, August 30: Municipal Corporation Shimla has announced plans to disconnect power and water supply of Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) Tutikandi in Shimla for non-payment of pending property tax of ₹6.33 crore. The decision was taken during a Municipal Corporation House meeting chaired by Mayor Surender Chauhan on Thursday, where councillors unanimously demanded strict action against big defaulters.
During the meeting, councillors highlighted the need to take strict action against non-payers of property tax, with special focus on big defaulters like ISBT Tutikandi. Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bhupendra Atri informed the House that a demand notice of ₹6.33 crore has already been issued to the ISBT management, warning that power and water supply will be disconnected in case of non-payment. The ISBT management had sought a one-month extension, which expires on August 31.
With the deadline approaching, councillors have asked the municipal corporation to disconnect services if dues are not paid. Mayor Surender Chauhan stressed the importance of property tax as the primary revenue source for the corporation and directed officials to take appropriate action against defaulters.
Apart from illegal taxes, the municipal corporation has raised concerns over unauthorised activities in the ISBT parking area. Notices have been issued regarding illegal use of parking spaces for private and commercial purposes without proper permission. Special attention was drawn to a hospital opened in the area without the required approval from the corporation, which was found to be in violation of rules.
The municipal corporation house has directed a committee to inspect the ISBT premises this week and submit a report on unauthorized activities. Based on the findings, the corporation will take action, including potentially cutting off power and water supply, as per rules.
Mayor Chauhan reiterated the corporation’s commitment to ensure compliance of property tax rules, saying such taxes are important for the financial health of the city. He assured that defaulters will face strict consequences as per the rules.
