Shimla, 09 August: In a significant change to the state’s electricity rules, the Himachal Pradesh government has introduced new rules for consumers seeking electricity connections with capacity up to 150 kW. The move comes after the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission amended national guidelines, which have now been adopted by the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Earlier, these rules applied only to consumers with power requirements of up to 50 kW. However, with the new rules coming into force, the limit has been raised to 150 kW, reflecting the growing energy demands of large commercial and industrial consumers in the state.
Under the revised guidelines, new applicants for electricity connections within this limit will be responsible for the costs associated with all necessary infrastructure, including wiring, meters, transformers and related equipment. The state electricity board has been directed to charge these consumers at the newly established rates, ensuring that costs reflect current market conditions.
This change is particularly relevant for large businesses and industries that require more power capacity. For example, enterprises that require special transformers and extensive wiring installations will now face these updated charges when applying for new connections.
The government has made it clear that these changes are aimed at ensuring that the costs of installing and maintaining the necessary infrastructure are distributed equitably among those who use significant amounts of electricity. This approach is expected to support the sustainability of the state’s power distribution system and encourage responsible energy use among high-demand consumers.
It is important to note that these new rules will primarily affect commercial and industrial users. Domestic consumers will not be affected by these changes, as the new costs are targeted at those who are engaged in high levels of power consumption for business purposes.
The revised rules are seen as a step towards creating a more balanced and equitable power distribution framework in the state, ensuring that infrastructure costs are in line with usage demands and promote long-term sustainability.
