Shimla, July 23: BJP Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur has demanded accountability from the Congress government for the massive debt of Rs 25,000 crore taken during its tenure. Thakur criticised the current government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, saying there was lack of transparency and mismanagement in handling the state’s finances.

Talking to the media after the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected MLAs, Thakur stressed the important role of the opposition in ensuring the accountability of the Congress government. He said, “It is the job of the opposition to keep the government on the right track. We should strongly oppose every anti-people work and dictatorial decision. If the government does good work then the Bharatiya Janata Party is with the government, but if it acts arbitrarily then we will raise our voice against it. We will rebuke and stop them for every wrong decision. If needed, we will fight for the interests of the people from the streets to the House.”

Thakur, accusing the government of failing to fulfil its election promises, advised Chief Minister Sukhu to stop misleading the people and focus on fulfilling the promises made during the election campaign. He said that the Chief Minister should now stop lying and work towards fulfilling the election promises made by the Congress. Now, lying will not help him. The people of the state are waiting for relief from the government. The disaster-affected families have not received any relief yet. The youth are staging a sit-in protest at the gate of the Selection Commission to release the results of the examinations. The Chief Minister should remember the big statements of the big leaders of the Congress party and start working towards fulfilling them with immediate effect.

When asked by journalists about the debt liabilities, Thakur demanded an explanation from the government. He said, “Instead of talking about this and that, the Chief Minister should explain why the government took a loan of about Rs 25 thousand crore in one and a half year tenure? Today development work in the state has come to a standstill. What did the government do with this money? Where was it spent?”Thakur compared the financial management of the Congress government with that of the previous BJP government.

He said, “Our government also faced the dreadful phase of the pandemic like Corona. Not even a single penny was cut from the rights of any employee. Not a single development work was allowed to stop. From roads to educational and health institutions, everything was made better and better. From giving pay commission to the employees to providing every necessary facility to the common man. Schemes like Himcare and Sahara were given.”

Thakur accused the current government of ending the successful schemes started by the BJP and said that schemes like Grihini Suvidha were taken to every home. The budget of social security was quadrupled. Government schemes were taken to every home, but what did the Sukhu government do? The institutions opened by us were closed, the budget of our government’s schemes was stopped and the schemes were closed undeclaredly. The youth and farmers were cheated by closing schemes like Swavalamban and Prakritik Kheti. Why is the government taking loans every month even after closing dozens of schemes? The people of the state should answer this.
