Himachal Assembly by-election: Voting picks up pace, 48 percent voting till 1 pm, highest 51.59 percent voting in Nalagarh

According to the state election department, over 48 percent voting has been recorded till 1 pm. Nalagarh recorded the highest polling of 51.59 percent, followed by Hamirpur at 47.05 percent and Dehra at 46.47 percent.

Shimla, July 10: Voting is underway for by-elections in three assembly constituencies of Himachal Pradesh – Dehra, Hamirpur and Nalagarh – and no untoward incident has been reported from anywhere so far. Voting in all three constituencies began at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm. According to the state election department, over 48 percent voting has been recorded till 1 pm. Nalagarh recorded the highest polling of 51.59 percent, followed by Hamirpur at 47.05 percent and Dehra at 46.47 percent.

Earlier, the pace of voting was very slow in the morning and only 16 percent voting was recorded in the first two hours. 32 percent voting was recorded till 11 am. The results of the by-elections will be declared on July 13.

More than 2 lakh 55 thousand 4 hundred voters are exercising their votes in the three assembly constituencies. 13 candidates are trying their luck in all three constituencies. Five candidates each are in the fray in Kangra and Nalagarh while three candidates are in the fray in Hamirpur.

According to the Election Commission, there are a total of 78095 voters in Hamirpur assembly constituency. Similarly, there are 94755 voters in Nalagarh and 86520 voters in Dehra.

The main contest on these three seats is between Congress and BJP. In Dehra assembly constituency, there is a contest between Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur, Congress candidate, and BJP’s Hoshiyar Singh. In Hamirpur, Ashish Sharma of BJP and Dr. Pushpinder Verma of Congress, while in Nalagarh, Congress’ Hardeep Singh Baba and BJP candidate K.L. Thakur’s political fate will be sealed in EVMs today.

Hamirpur is the home district of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and former Union Minister and MP Anurag Singh Thakur, so this by-election has become a matter of prestige for both the leaders.
